Winnie, a 10 month-old domestic shorthair, came in to our clinic on June 4th, 2018 after an emergency c-section at an overnight emergency facility to deliver 3 still-born kittens after she was in labour for 2 days. She was in very poor condition after the surgery and lengthy labour and was almost unresponsive when she arrived for hospitalization. We kept her on intravenous fluids during the day and were planning to transfer her back to an emergency clinic for night monitoring, but unfortunately her previous owner never showed up to take her. I decided at 5 minutes past closing to continue with intravenous fluid therapy and pray that she survived the night.
She miraculously survived the night and started to gain strength and motivation to get better. Our amazing doctors and team worked vigorously to help her get ‘back on her feet’ and back to an energetic 10 month-old. We kept her on IV fluids for about a week while giving her antibiotics and making sure her blood values were rebounding to normal levels.
After numerous attempts to contact the owner, there was no answer to either our emails nor our phone calls. After a month, our clinic manager asked the local BCSPCA what we as a clinic should do in this situation, and they said it plain and simple “She’s up for adoption”.
To my excitement, my co-workers elected me as the new ‘mom’ of this incredible young cat. I had been spending a lot of time on my lunch breaks with Winnie, playing with her and bonding with her, and they said that it was time that I finally had a little ‘fur baby’ to look after and to cherish.
It goes without saying, this little cat has changed my life. She has spunk and love and will continue to be a fighter. She’s absolutely lovely.
