A microchip can provide a lifetime of permanent identification if your dog or cat gets lost.
As pet owners, the last thing we want to think about is losing our furry friends. Whether you turned your head for a second while your pet was in the yard or they broke away from their leash, we want to help you ensure your pet makes it back home to you. Microchipping is a permanent identification that helps us identify your pet if they get lost.
It’s impossible to predict if your pet will get lost. Don’t wait until it’s too late to start thinking about a pet recovery plan! Microchipping includes implanting a rice grain-sized chip in your pet, typically between their shoulder blades. If your pet is lost and brought to a veterinary office or animal shelter, they’ll use a handheld scanner to detect a microchip. Each microchip has a serial number that when imputed into a pet recovery database, will connect us to the pet owner via their contact information. It’s important to let us know if your contact information changes so we can update the system.
Collars and tags are other forms of pet ID but those can be removed or fall off. Microchipping is a permanent form of ID so once your pet has it implanted, it will last its lifetime. The chip uses radio frequency so there’s no need to replace the chip or change batteries. We also offer tattooing, which could be a good fit for your pet. It’s best to combine a few forms of ID, like collars, tags and microchipping. If you’d like to discuss having your pet microchipped or tattooed, please contact us at 604-464-6666.
We use a needle to implant the microchip, with the process only taking a few moments. Your pet will not need to be under general anesthesia since it is a quick and painless process. Some pet owners opt to get their pet microchipped at the same time as other procedures, like surgeries. Our veterinary team can discuss the best time for your pet to get its permanent ID.
