Parasite control has many advantages for your pet's health and well-being.
Parasites aren’t only pesky, unsightly creatures. Trouble sometimes comes in small packages! These pests can cause a range of health issues for your pet, from skin conditions to more long-term conditions that can be fatal. Our veterinary hospital is committed to preventive healthcare, which includes ensuring your pet is on a parasite control program.
Either with the help of oral medication or injection, your pet will receive broad-spectrum coverage against a range of internal and external parasites. Some medications could need to be combined to protect your pet against internal and external parasites. Since parasites can infect your pet throughout the year, it’s important your pet is on a year-round parasite control plan. Depending on risk factors like where you live, how often you travel and if your pet spends a lot of time around other animals, we’ll decide which method best meets their needs. Some internal parasites include roundworms, whipworms, tapeworms and hookworms. Some external parasites include fleas, ticks and ear mites.
Your pet’s parasite control will be unique to them and their individual needs. For example, if your dog spends a lot of time in kennels or frequently enjoys roaming in the woodland near your home, these factors could increase their risk of infections in comparison to a house cat. Also, not all products approved for dogs can be given to your cat and vice versa. As a pet owner, it’s your responsibility to closely follow the parasite control plan to help protect your pet against parasite infections. Even one missed dose can significantly increase your pet’s risk of infection.
Most parasites are masters of disguise, meaning it’s difficult to detect an infection without a test. It’s hard to look at your pet and know if they’re infected, which is why parasite preventives are essential. Furry friends are exposed to a range of parasites on a daily basis so there’s no way to guarantee if they’ve come in contact with any. This reinforces the importance of a parasite prevention plan.
